1958年(昭和33年),旧日本住宅公団によって阿佐ヶ谷住宅は分譲された.大卒初任給が1万3467円であった当時において,分譲価格が143~183万円と破格の物件であった阿佐ヶ谷住宅は,大手企業の社宅や医者,大学教授などといった富裕層が多く居住する高級住宅地であった.
ところが経年劣化や陳腐化に伴い,かねてより全面建替えによる再開発計画が取り沙汰されていた.長きに渡り膠着状態にあった再開発だが,2013(平成25年)6月,住宅の解体が開始され,阿佐ヶ谷住宅55年に及ぶ歴史に幕を閉じた.
おだやかな時間が流れ,人々が時代とともに育み継承してきた阿佐ヶ谷住宅.大半の樹木が伐採され,戦後高度経済成長の象徴ともいうべき住宅が解体されたことで,かつての情景を失った阿佐ヶ谷住宅は現代を生きる我々に提示していた.当時の日本は希望に満ち溢れ,明日は今日よりも豊かな日々が訪れると信じて邁進していた.その結果,現在では確かに当時追い求めていた経済的・物質的に豊かな時代となりえた.
