The Sun Also Rises

Japan is one of the most an earthquake-ridden country in the world, because of it's composed of four continental plate boundaries. Thereby, earthquakes that caused a large number of dead and enormous damage has occurred many times in Japan, as typified by The Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11th, 2011). There're also some research reports that a huge earthquake centered on the Nankai Trough will occur with high probability in the near future.

In addition, history of Japan isn't too much to say that is the history of natural disaster. People had faith in Multitudinous gods that mean god dwells in all natural things from time immemorial. Therefore, natural disasters were thought to be the judgment of God, by accepting that judgment, dramatic reconstruction has been achieved every time a disaster occurs.

People were very sensitive to in the event of an earthquake, but gradually forget the threat as time passes, and also disaster consciousness recede in steps. However, an earthquake which occurs suddenly in daily life will trigger a vivid recall of memories of the past that have been forgotten.

As a matter of course, it's better for us to have a peaceful life without suffering from the earthquake. Nonetheless there's a possibility of suffering the earthquake in any region of Japan. All the more, this work shows that don't forget the threats and damage that occurred once, and to become open up thinking again about the importance of preparing for emergency from everyday.

陽はまた昇る

大学時代に地球科学を専攻していた私にとって，地震はより身近な自然現象のひとつである．現在も地震発生時における構造物の耐震安全性能評価等の業務に携わっており，日常生活の一部として地震に関わる環境下に身を置いている．

これまでも日本では東日本大震災(2011/03/11)に代表されるような，多数の死者や甚大な被害をもたらした地震が幾度となく発生してきた．阪神淡路大震災(1995/01/17)以降，耐震設計の見直しや地震予測に対する研究が本格化していったものの，未だに地震予測はほぼ不可能であるため，日頃から地震に対する備え＝防災がより重要となる．2016年に発生した有感地震は実に6857回にものぼり，近い将来には南海トラフを中心とした巨大地震が高確率で発生するとの研究報告もあるが，いつ発生するか明確な予測は現時点ではたってはいない．

あれだけ過敏に反応していた地震発生直後も，時が経つに連れて次第にその脅威を忘れ，人々の防災意識も徐々に薄れていく．また，直接的な被害を被っていなかった場合はこの傾向がより顕著に表れ，やがて何事もなかったかのように日々の生活へと戻っていくのだ．しかし，何気なく過ごす日々の中で突如として発生する地震は，忘れかけていたかつての記憶を鮮明に呼び起こすトリガーとなり得る．

当然のことながら，地震の被害に遭うことなく平穏な生活が過ごせることに越したことはない．しかしながら，世界でも有数の地震多発国といわれるように，プレート沈み込み帯が複数存在する日本において，どの地域であったとしても突如として地震被害に遭遇する可能性は否定できない．だからこそ，当作品を通じてかつて発生した地震による脅威や被害を風化させないこととともに，常日頃から有事に対する備えをしておくことの重要さについて改めて考えるきっかけになることを願う．
